01 Overview

👁️ The Prompt
The prompt for this project is to redesign the currency converter App "Elk""View Elk"

⁉️ Why?
When people are traveling internationally, most of them will need to convert money to foreign currencies. However, most app currently on the App store are not very user-friendly and only provides basic calculator functions, which is only one part of people's needs.

02 Research

👯 Who is the target audience?
Travelers: They need convert their money to foreign currency before and also during travel

🔎 Heuristic Analysis
In order to have a general sense of how currency converter app works and how do they perform, I downloaded few apps and made a heuristic analysis for their performance to help me understand current products on the market.

Here are the standards that I used to evaluate those Apps:

Recognition rather than recall
Flexibility and efficiency of use
Aesthetic and minimalist design
Help users recognize, diagnose, and recover from errors
Help and documentation

Visibility of system status
Match between system and the real world
User control and freedom
Consistency and standards
Error prevention

Currency Converter Simple

This App collaborates with library to provide user various kinds of book resources and present those information in an organized way

❎ Cons

📝 Insights

Many of the apps only provide conversion function and they are not efficient to use

🕵🏻 Secondary Research
I did secondary research online about how to exchange currency, what's the place you should/shouldn't visit for exchanging currency, tips for exchange currency during the trip and so on. Here are 2 main pain points I found in the secondary research:

Pain point 1: It is hard to find a place that provides a good conversion rate
When people are traveling, there's no such effective way for them to find out where they can get a good conversion rate. For instance, places like airports and major transportation hubs usually don’t offer the most favorable rates and also charge higher commission fees. However, if people plan ahead before traveling, they can get a favorable rate at the local bank.

Pain point 2: They don't familiar with all kinds of currency
For some countries like Cuba, there are 2 different types of local currency. CUC is mainly for travelers and CUP is mainly for local people and smaller transactions. In cases like this, people need to do research about what currency they should use before traveling.

🤔  How might we help the user to find the exchange place with best rate and also help them to efficiently convert currency?

03 Design

🕵🏻 Features
In order to solve the 2 pain points I mentioned above, i came up with 2 features that can provide user a better experience.

01. Interactive map that shows surrounding exchange places with best rates
02. Foreign currency generator and calculator

🏗 User Flow

04 User Testing

🏃🏻 What i did
In order to test the usability of my app, I asked 5 participants to complete 3 different tasks by using the low-fidelity prototype. My goal is to discover potential problems while observing their behaviors and actions. The three tasks are:

01. Enter the custom amount and convert to foreign currency
02. Add extra currency
03. Find out a place with the best rate

🏗 Feature 1: Currency Conversion

Version 1

Feedback 1: Scrolling interaction is not intuitive. User had a hard time to figure out how to change to a different currency and they don't know how to add extra currency.

Feedback 2: Text input for selecting countries is annoying. They don't want to type the name of those different countries.

Version 2

What i improved:
1. Having a list to select countries, which is easier than text input.
2. User can easily swipe to select different currency

Then for this iteration, I did another round of user testing. And here's the feedback:

Feedback 1: User had a hard time to figure out how to change to a different currency and they don't know how to add extra currency.
Feedback 2: There is no visual clue to show what currency they are calculating
Feedback 3: Sometimes they accidentally chose a wrong country and they want to have a way to re-access the onboarding process.

Version 3

What i improved:
1. Enable user to re-select countries. If they made an error, they have the choice to go back and redo the process. This makes the user felt more in control.
2. Enable them to quickly add extra currency. The add currency button is more obvious than previous small icon. And they can also search currency directly.

🏗 Feature 2: Best Rate Finder

Version 1

Feedback 1: Location icon is too small to see.

Feedback 2: They don't know if the number in the card means that this is the best rate

Version 2

What i improved:
1. Enlarge the icon so user can see where is the place that provides the best rate more easily
2. Showing them a conversion ratio so user knows that it is the conversion rate for those two currency
3. Showing rate in the map so user can have a quicker and general sense of what rate is been provided around them

Then for this iteration, I did another round of user testing. And here's the feedback:

Feedback 1: Buttons for each filter is too small so they can't see them very easily
Feedback 2: Filter icon is not very clear and they didn't think this is the filter icon at first
Feedback 3: They want to use map app to navigate because they said map app provide a better navigation system and provide them different methods of transportations

Version 3

What i improved:
1. Change filter icon so user can easily figure out this is the filter buttonback and redo the process. This makes the user felt more in control.
2. After they tap the card, they can see the image of the place and open the map app.
3. Enlarge the buttons for filter so it's easier for them to see what those options are.

05 Final Design

After more rounds of user testing, iterations, and critiques. Here's the final version that i came up with. Thanks for watching!
